BMW still reminds us that, notwithstanding, electro-mobility has always been their thing. If a campus dedicated to autonomous driving was created in 2018, with 2,000 dedicated employees, BMW recalls that the firm has a sustainable development department, the first electric 1602 (with 60 kilometers of autonomy) has 40 years old, the i3 120 AH will have 360 km of autonomy (NDEC value, it will be 310 in WTLP) and suddenly, will do without its range extender, and with 9 models (in mid-2019), they have the widest electric and plug-in hybrid range on the market. And this will only improve: in 2025, the BMW range will include 25 green models including 12 100% electric, including the electric Mini in 2019, the ix3 (400 km of autonomy) in 2020, the Vision I Next and the i4 in 2021.

To do this, BMW plans to create a circular economy of the battery, relying in particular on Chinese resources After all China is the 4 th global market for Mini, this is where the Mini E will be produced and ix3 . However, the Germans do not put all their eggs in the same basket: hydrogen is one of the solutions studied, as evidenced by the work carried out on the 5 GT Series in 2015.

A world of services

Did you know that in Munich, 30% of the cars in circulation are looking for a parking space? It is from this observation that BMW has developed a whole range of services: Park Now, Charge Now, the meaning of which we immediately understand, but also Drive Now and Reach Now: Drive Now is self-driving. sharing and BMW has already set up a fleet of 6,000 vehicles in 13 cities. For parking, BMW acquired Parkmobile, which reaches 22 million customers in 1,000 cities, including 15 in France. And as for Charge Now, there are 89,000 charging points in 75 countries, including 9,000 in Europe: it is currently the most comprehensive global network.

Connected cars

1998: BMWs can equip themselves with an emergency call. 2008: on-board internet is possible. Since 2015, all BMWs have integrated a SIM card. The future therefore lies in the connected car. BMW tells us about a future where your car is connected to your diary, knows when and where your next appointment is and sends you alerts depending on the route and traffic. What about privacy? Even if there will be a connection with the personal assistants of GAFA (therefore private life, blah…), BMW ensures that everything will be secure on its own servers. Of which act.

BMW 530e iPerformance

With the latest generation of X5, BMW has also unveiled its reverse gear assistant: when maneuvering in a narrow and congested alley, or towards an overcrowded parking lot, or in a dead end, or in a forest, what do you know- I, just press a button next to the gear selector to see the X5 automatically reverse the last 50 meters traveled, to the nearest centimeter. Bluffing.

This is the future according to BMW. We cannot blame the Munich manufacturer for not being in his place: that of an opinion leader, who has planned everything and who considers that everyone can choose the type of mobility that suits him at the time that suits him, without necessarily own a car. Charging, parking, use, management of daily life, leisure activities, loved ones, everything is planned.

A few unknowns remain: the price of all these services. To use an expression that is part of the current trend, will they be yellow-vests compatible, or, in other words, what will be the place on the road for users who can afford mobility services? trendy ? Finally, all this seems to mean the end of two-wheelers. Certainly, BMW has already worked on an R 1200 GS capable of driving alone, but what is the point of being perched on a machine that you do not control? The future will tell. In the meantime, what do you think?
